Cute photo of Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher from 1959.
It’s not rare that a mother and daughter have such a close relationship. However, it’s not every day that a relationship like this plays out across the tabloids. Fisher was open about her tense relationship with her mother during her formative years, telling Oprah:

The family is organized [around] the parents, [whereas] normally the family is organized around raising the child.
Although the two were often at odds, in 2011 Reynolds spoke about how she loved her daughter even more so after Fisher was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She said:
My lowest point in Carrie and my relationship was probably when we discovered that she was ill, or that she had this mental health problem, and that it was going to be with her forever. That was very hard. How is she going to get along in life? How can I help her in life? All I could do is love her, and always shall.
It took decades for Fisher and Reynolds to reconnect, but by the end of their lives they were extremely close, with Fisher saying that she was fearless because of her mother. Both women passed away within a day of one another in 2017.
