First our government encouraged Iraq to fight Iran which they did for 8 years. How our government tried to settle the score with Iran in this was they wouldn't let either side win. They did this by arming each side when it started to lose. This cost thousands and thousands of lives on either side then between 1980 and 1988. So, the war ended in stalemate for both countries with no real land gained or lost between them. This is one reason why Saddam Hussein asked if he could have Kuwait because he wanted their oil wells. But, Kuwaitis had billions in the bank and paid our army like a mercenary army to get their land and oil wells back. All this actually happened in world history.
