I've only seen lightning hit a tree and set it on fire once in my life
I was at around 6000 feet coming down the paved road from Castle Lake near Lake Siskiyou and the little City of Mt. Shasta when lightning struck a tree and I saw smoke rising. I wasn't near enough to see the effect of the previous photo but because I saw smoke rising I had a 5 gallon bucket in my van so I emptied out the bucket of stuff and used the bucket to gather water from the lake and returned and tried to put out the fire while waiting for Fire suppression Forest service trucks to show up on the scene. When I ran down the hill with the bucket and a shovel I came upon something I have never seen before which was the sight of a huge tree (Pine or fir) with the bark blown off from top to bottom in a spiral sort of like barber pole. If you had been standing by the tree you would have easily been killed because there was bark strewn for quite a ways out from the tree and after the bolt of lightning struck the tree it went into a fallen tree and started the dead fallen tree on fire too. I only had one bucket of water so I couldn't do very much. I was able to do more with the shovel though until the Forest service Trucks got there and put the fire out completely before it spread up to Castle Lake nearby.
