The battleship USS ARIZONA sinking after being hit by Japanese air attack on Dec. 7,1941, "A Date Which Will Live In Infamy."
Built in 1916, this Pennsylvania-class battleship had a long life before it exploded during the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on Dec. 7, 1941. During World War I the Arizona monitored the eastern shore of Britain and boasted its prowess as one of the few oil burning ships of the time. In 1929 the Navy updated the ship with deck armor, boilers, turbines, guns and fire-control.
When Pearl Harbor was attacked the Arizona was hit with a bomb that detonated a powder magazine, sending the entire ship down in flames. 1,177 officers and crewmenlost their lives aboard the Arizona that day, and the wreckage still sits at the bottom of the harbor.
