| More on weather.com The point is that people not prepared for the dry desert heat might not survive there either just from the dry heat there. If you have ever walked across the desert even in Southern California at over 100 degrees you really have to be in excellent health to survive this. Better bring a lot of water too and a hat and sunscreen if you are a city person because often there are no stores or gas stations for up to 50 miles at a time there. Or you can be happy in Furnace Creek walking around this time of year in Death Valley which is even closer to Area 51:
