It's because people with personality disorders don't believe there is anything wrong with them. The traumas in their lives prevent them from seeing what's wrong with them. For example, Trump has a personality disorder and many people who support him do too. They recognize a fellow personality disorder victim. They don't necessarily realize that Trump has narcissistic personality disorder and likely don't recognize their own personality disorder either.
The reason counseling won't work with most personality disorder people is that they don't believe anything is wrong with theme to begin with. Because of this no one can help them.
Until you can diagnose something is wrong most people will not move to correct whatever that is.
The pioneer spirit often created personality disorders in people as they settled this country by the way which often made people violent as a result. Being violent often is a symptom of a personality disorder because these people believe they are right and so are willing to be violent because of their personality disorders in the first place. This is why so many people who support Trump also have personality disorders and are willing to kill or to try to kill people.
People less interested in being violent are usually less traumatized people who don't have personality disorders from Traumas in their lives growing up.
So, especially among lower and middle Class Republicans being violent is a problem because of traumas that they have physically but not emotionally or mentally survived.
And they cannot be helped by counseling unless they see that they have a problem and are willing to change and grow so they don't kill anyone.
However, this doesn't mean many Democrats don't have personality disorders too. Personality disorders take many different forms because there are now 10 types of personality disorders.
For example, most ISIS and Al Qaida Terrorists have personality disorders caused by their fathers telling them that if they didn't obey they would kill them as children. This is common in Muslim Countries around the world but tends to create personality disorders as adults in some people who were just too traumatized by all this.
