Why?
Because 70% of the American electorate want witnesses at this trial as well as a fair trial in the Senate. If McConnell tries to dismiss this out of hand then he and all Republicans will pay the price at the polls for years to come.
If 70% of the Electorate wants something and Republicans don't deliver it is the end for them.
How can any American respect Republicans in the Senate if they take the oath swear on a Bible and lie? There is no integrity there keeping a criminal in office. The American people know this.
Basically, they make Christianity absurd to Lie on a Bible like they intend to presently.
All they are doing is showing the world they are not really Christians and worship Trump instead.
