4,285 acres as of today. I have friends with homes in the Carmel Valley Village area who are very worried and say the smoke is choking everyone who goes outside it is so bad. People in Pacific Grove are also complaining about ash coming down and heavy smoke. Smoke they say is coming across the Bay from north of Davenport in the fires there as well as the River Fire in the Salinas and San Benancio area and the Carmel Fire. If you look at a smoke map of California right now, Mt. Shasta is one of the few places where smoke isn't very bad right now. The smoke is about from Redding continuously all the way to about Orange County now. So, millions of people are suffering with smoke inhalation if they have to be outside at all. So, likely many people are having to go to hospitals to go on oxygen to make it through all this. The lightning strikes started so many fires at once up and down the state that Cal Fire and local fire companies are really hard pressed to damp hundreds of lightning caused fires in a short time. So, many of these fires got going because it isn't practical to put out hundreds of fires at the same time. Practically speaking maybe the state could deal with 100 fires at the same time with good results but when you have literally hundreds of fires up and down the state caused by lightning strikes some of those fires are going to go out of control which is what we have now here in California.
It's fairly apocalyptic looking with ash coming down everywhere and hopefully it's not hot ash starting more fires where it lands.
So, I'm extremely grateful right now because Both where I live near San Francisco is under heavy heavy smoke as well as Santa Barbara. So, I'm very happy to be here in Mt. Shasta where the smoke isn't so bad.
