As you can see for yourself if you click the "smoke box" at: https://storymaps.esri.com/stories/usa-wildfires/
The smoke is supposed to get really bad this evening and night (Sunday August 23rd 2020). Of course it is like a weather report and subject to change because of presently unknown variables but up until now it has been pretty accurate.
Like for example, we went up to 8000 feet up Everitt memorial highway up to where the old Ski Bowl Was until the early 1970s when an avalanche destroyed it. And we also walked into Lower panther Meadows to see the meadows and brook from the spring higher on the mountain. We could see the mountain pretty good so the smoke wasn't that bad there. But, many places in California you can barely see to drive whether it is night or day and you have to put your car or trucks air on recycle with your air conditioning on to breathe okay even though you might not see the road much. People are getting used to the barely visible orange or red dot in the sky as being the sun when you can still see it through the thick smoke and ash all over everything over most of the state.
To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
