The Dune Series by Frank Herbert is a really amazing Sci-fi series: If you haven't read the books or watched the movies or series you are in for a rare treat

I think the Dune Series and the Ringworld Series with Louis Wu are probably two of my favorite Science Fiction series I've ever read. I started about age 9 or 10 years old reading Robert Heinlein books and eventually read a lot of Asimov too. What these two authors shared is a scientific background and so when they wrote the wrote just like Gene Roddenbury and George Lucas plausible scientific fiction based upon somwhat known scientific theories of the greatest Scientists of their times. This type of non-fantasy science fiction became more the predominant form of science fiction starting with Star Trek the TV Series in the 1960s. Another older series that is wonderful though dated now is the "Foundation" series written by Isaac Asimov in the 1950s. The Ringworld series is also this plausible scientific type of series as well based upon scientific theories. However, I'm not sure how you could mine enough metals to actually make a real ringworld and then set it spinning around any sun in the universe.

The one thing that is hard to get used to is the level of detail to his stories that Frank Herbert creates. He sort of goes on and on regarding the histories of his planets and their peoples. So, this is the hardest thing to get used to in Frank Herbert's writing.

But, just like with "Lord of the Rings" by Tolkien it is this very well crafted attention to detail that helps makes the whole thing work for the reader or the ones who watch or who make the movies.
