Hawkeye's Most Hilarious Arrow Is Also His Most Sadistic
As Clint Barton and Kate Bishop cut loose in the Hawkeye Season 1 finale, the Avenger's most hilarious arrow also ends up being his most sadistic.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Episode 6 of Hawkeye, "So This Is Christmas?" now streaming on Disney+.
In the Hawkeye Season 1 finale, Jeremy Renner's Clint Barton and Hailee Steinfeld's Kate Bishop finally become the perfect pairing, waging war on the Tracksuit Mafia. Kazi and his goons think they are laying a trap for the heroes, but Clint and Kate prove they aren't to be underestimated, even if the opposition has the numbers. However, as the duo unleashes their new arsenal, Hawkeye's most hilarious arrow also ends up as his most sadistic.
It occurs when the thugs botch the hit on Kate's mom, Eleanor, after she broke ties with their boss, Kingpin. As the brawl ensues, Clint and Kate batter the guys, letting them know this union of the old and new generations is not to be trifled with.
And the fight comes to a head on the ice rink at Rockefeller Center, just as the Mafia unleashes dozens of operatives. Hawkeye starts firing an array of arrows he created using Stark casings, but this time, he shares the wealth with Kate, providing her with her own trick arrows. There are magnetic arrows capturing guns, electric arrows stunning bad guys, arrows shooting tranquilizer darts, and of course, explosive arrows, but just as the Mafia plunges a van off the road and towards the heroes on the ice, Kate shoots off a Pym arrow that shrinks the goons down to size.
This moment homages an earlier episode when Clint uses Pym Particles in an arrow to enlarge an item to crash onto the Mafia's entourage. However, this time around, it's the total opposite, highlighting that Clint is interested not just in what Giant-Man has accomplished but also Ant-Man. And as the squeaky voices are heard from the fan, the show matches the fun-loving, comedic Disney brand, but things quickly take a dark turn when Kate asks Clint what they should do with the van. Sadly, Hawkeye admits he doesn't know because he didn't talk to Paul Rudd's Scott Lang about this.
This moment ends up coming off pretty disturbing because it's unclear if the shrinkage could have harmed people not accustomed to the science, and one would assume an Avenger would know the ramifications before using this weapon. And if things didn't feel irresponsible enough, it gets worse when an owl swoops in and picks up the van, which comes off like a toy at this point.
Clint and Kate focus on the grounded enemies but let the mini-dudes get towed away. Intervening would have meant probably killing the owl, but that would have been forgiven due to the sanctity of human life, as the bird may well have taken them to feed on. So, despite Hawkeye's fun nature, the moment with the truck is a real tragedy, and it's all due to heroes who don't care about collateral damage.
