Why?
Because even in the 1950s public schools were NEVER safe to put children in. For me, often it was like a battlefield in the 1950s and any schools I attended that were public schools might have had Hispanics and whites together in them but no blacks at all then. But, even then, it was horrific what I had to witness often.
Children bullied to the point where they went to the hospital with broken noses and broken arms etc.
I was lucky because no one that I know died in the schools I attended.Even though one A Student burned down my high school because he failed one test and didn't want to be beaten by his father so he burned down the high school to hide the evidence which ruined his life.
So, even then life was crazy in a different way than now. Then I was often threatened with knives and switchblades, now people are shot in drive by shootings instead. As a result I'm afraid of knives but not of guns because no one ever threatened me with guns in my life, only knives.
But, with school shootings caused by parents giving their crazy dysfunctional children guns I think removing my children from all public schools would be the first thing I would do.
If you have someone to stay at home and teach and supervise your kids here is one financially reasonable option where I put my 3 children in 1980 on Independent study for 5 years time. The reason we did this was an 8th Grader broke a 4th grader's jaw within a couple of weeks of moving the 4th graders to the Junior High school because of overcrowding. Our response was to remove all three children from public school and to put them all on independent study.
This also allowed us to move into our A-Frame house I built on our 2 1/2 acres in a remote location with a beautiful view of Mt. Shasta because it was about 25 to 30 miles from public school in Mt. Shasta City then. The land was at 4000 feet elevation with a spring for water and a beautiful view of Mt. Shasta and Port Orford Cedars and Pines and Firs and Oaks and manzinita on the land and wildflowers in spring and summer.
Here's where we chose to put our kids on independent study from home for 5 years time until the oldest was 12:
