It's sort of set in a Merlin like Time but in this realm women are the main powerful ones called the Aes Sedai who live in a place called the White Tower. I really liked the first episode and now they have 5 episodes. But, the first one is sort of like a movie unto itself and is designed to draw you in in a sort of "Lord of the Rings" or Game of Thrones kind of way.
