Does a ship Flounder or Founder when it sinks?

If a ship sinks after capsizing, or as a consequence of a leak in the hull or other water ingress, it may be described as having foundered or foundering. Large ships are designed with compartments to help preserve the necessary buoyancy.
However, small ships and boats often do not have compartments to keep them afloat during storms and high seas. This is one reason why there are often small craft warnings for small boats that cannot stay afloat if the seas become too rough and founder and sink.
