I think this article might apply to Putin as well as Trump. This likely is why they like each other because they both likely have the same personality disorder called "Narcissistic Personality disorder". This particular personality disorder has no empathy. It is caused by Trauma. In Trump's case it was caused by his father and what happened to his brother Fred. In Putin's case I imagine the training he went through in the KGB and before this was so traumatic to his psychology that it created narcissistic personality disorder which was the only way he could move forward, especially in an atheistic Soviet World.
What do I mean by this? "If he was forced to be an atheist to survive then the only person he could worship to survive this was himself." This ended his empathy for anyone else but himself and is why he can kill without guilt in Chechnya, Georgia, Syria and now Ukraine. He has no guilt because all the people dying he has no connection to because of his narcissistic personality disorder. He is in his own mind guilt free. He is the ONLY PERSON of meaning on earth. Everyone else is an animal and he is the only civilized person on earth. So, literally EVERYONE can die because they don't share his beliefs of self worship.

So, I presently believe Trump, Putin and Hitler all shared Narcissistic Personality Disorder which is an extreme danger to the whole world. At least Trump has been removed from the U.S. nuclear football regarding nuking other countries. However, Putin hasn't been removed from the Russian nuclear football (or however they do it). This is why Putin is so very much more dangerous than most people seem to realize on earth at present.
It is important to realize that for both Trump and Putin this is a mental illness and only gets worse with age and is not curable even with counseling. So, this is something they both will have until they die, unfortunately. So, even a psychologist with counseling (even if either of them tried) wouldn't be successful.
Why?
Because this is Trauma based sort of like PTSD from War or bad medical experiences. And often trauma based psychological reactions cannot be changed with counseling because they are like a long festering mortal wound to a person's personal psychology.
