Happy 4th of July everyone!

I was thinking about why this day is famous.

Basically, it's the day the U.S. declared itself free of England. Of course we had to fight for several years to make this actually happen.

However, the Declaration of Independence was signed in Philadelphia this day, July 4th 1776 when the first Congress of the United States signed this document which formally began the Revolutionary war. In some ways this war didn't end until 1814 because the British burned down the U.S. Capitol Around this time and were not defeated until Andrew Jackson drove the British Army out of I believe it was Louisiana and after that they didn't attack us anymore. Johnny Horton's "The Battle of New Orleans" was popular when I was a lad too which described the routing of the British from New Orleans by Andrew Jackson when he was a general. Eventually he became President of the United States too.

Yeah, they ran through the briers and they ran through the brambles And they ran through the bushes where a rabbit couldn't go They ran so fast that the hounds couldn't catch 'em On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico Full lyrics
