In 1980 I bought land without electricity or phone lines or gas lines in for about $8000

However, there is no land I know of that you would be allowed to build on and have passed by the county or state at this price now. However, I could be wrong. the land we purchased then was 2 1/2 acres of land at around 4000 feet elevation and it had a stream running through the property. So, even though we didn't drink this water from the stream we did bathe in it and wash clothes and ourselves in this water. We just hauled fresh water in from another source for drinking and cooking.

By doing this we saved around 60,000 to 70,000 dollars in rent money and had an amazing experience there by greatly reducing our overhead on extremely beautiful land with a view of Mt. Shasta. It was in Pine and Fir and Cedar trees but in the direction of Mt. Shasta was Manzinita bushes so we could see over these Bushes always Mt. Shasta every time of year.

Then we home schooled our kids because it was too far to take them to school every day because we were so remote.

However, this was one of the most amazing experiences of my life and my wife's life and my children's lives growing up.

It felt like sort of Swiss Family Robinson in a way that we had to be very innovative to live there but it was incredibly cost effective. Why?

NO Rent.

No utility bills

no phone bills

However, we did have to pay for the land ($8000)

Then we had to pay for property tax (that I think then was around 200 or 300 dollars a year

Then we had to pay for lumber to built the A-Frame (which at least then wasn't very expensive.

at the time we sold one of our vehicles which was a  1971 VW Camper Van to help finance the lumber we needed to build with.

then my father who had just retired help me build this place along with many of my friends who lived in the Mt. Shasta area (most of which are still alive today 45 years later).

Though this land was sold in 1989 I was very sad to see it go. Because we then had moved back from Maui Hawaii and had bought another business around this time. We also lived in Mt. Shasta city from 1990 to 1992 which is the last time I lived in Mt. Shasta. I have lived in the San Francisco Bay area every since.

However, I still visit for several weeks a year Mt. Shasta because it is one of my spiritual homes here on earth.

It's probably my favorite place to go to meet God that I have found here on earth yet.

By God's Grace
