US population Doubles in my lifetime

I was looking at a page in wikipedia and realized that the US population has doubled during my lifetime. In 1950 it appears to have been around 150 million when I was 2 years old and by 2010 it is expected to be 308 million. So its present amount is around 300 million double what it was when I was born 2 years before mid 20th century. Amazing!
