If you carefully read the above article Al Qaeda is now firmly entrenched in Syria. However, this means many things because Syria is ruled by Alawite minority Shia and Al Qaeda is traditionally Sunni and a natural enemy of all things Shia.  So, anyway you look at it this is really kind of twisted at the very least. However, I think Al Qaeda is actually a sworn enemy of Syria, Russia and Iran because Syria and Iran believe in a Shia form of Islam which Al Qaeda violently opposes. So, anyway you look at it this is all very twisted and convoluted and likely thousands more in Syria on all sides will die from ongoing Al Qaeda actions there.
