The article I quoted "40 maps that explain the world" was surprising to me in many ways. I think it is because most of us still might have the impression today that the U.S. is still the best place to be born on Earth. Though we might like to believe this still it actually isn't true anymore. The world keeps changing and smaller less populated countries have an easier time taking care better of all their citizens than we do. It is important to consider this in regard to living here. For example, most of the countries that are better to be born in are under about 20 to 30 million people total. This gives them the advantage of a smaller population. The more diverse in the physical size and population of a nation the harder it is to meet everyone's needs. This is a given worldwide. When the U.S. populations were smaller (under 150 million) the advantage of having small state populations was to our advantage. But now we have state populations like in California for instance that are above 30 to 35 million. This population level starts to reduce the good any state or Federal government can do for it's people. In other words in any state or Federal Government 25 to 30 million seems to be the upper limit of efficiency for any democracy. Understanding this we get why the U.S. (now 50 states) did so well up until about the 1960s and then started to not do as well (in relation to the rest of the developed world). As population increases worldwide it is obvious to me that in the poorer 50% of nations on earth that collapsed governments will become the norm. But, in more developed nations governments as populations increase will tend to become less efficient and more cumbersome and unwieldy. So, even though these richer governments won't collapse they will be less able to take care of their poor too. And this will tend to cause more crime as a direct result of the inability of larger developed nations to properly feed and educate and employ their poor. So, without social welfare systems in place crime rates will tend to rise exponentially.
It may be that for example in the U.S. that states might have to be limited in size (population wise) to be able to properly govern themselves. So, for example, states like California might need to be broken into 2 or more states along regional or topographical lines in order to be more efficient and better able to take care of their citizens in the long run.
The present population of California for example is 38.04 million.
I Googled this factoid on Google Search.
When we compare this to the entire population of Canada:
As you can see the ENTIRE population of Canada is 3 million (approximately) less than the state of California which must compete with 49 other U.S. States for Federal Government attention. So, this gives Canada a distinct advantage over California. What California has though is better weather in General than Canada. But Canada has many undeveloped regions and a lot of untapped natural resources in comparison to California. So, you can see why Canada is doing so well at present.
For example, it says that Switzerland is the best place on Earth to be born at present. I have been to Switzerland and I think Scotland and Switzerland and Hawaii are my favorite places I have visited off the mainland of the U.S. so far. I also love Canada a lot and have visited there at least 5 times in the last 15 years including going to Victoria a few weeks ago in British Columbia.
