1918 flu killed more than 50 million people Worldwide during that pandemic

 At 50 million deaths worldwide it competes with World War II for the most deaths from any cause in history because World War II is credited with 50 to 100 million deaths, 20 million just in Russia mostly from starvation during the Nazi invasion.

So, pandemics like the one that is scourging Africa right now, Ebola,  can kill millions when not able to be controlled in situations like Africa where people generally aren't medically disciplined enough and where people touch the bodies of the dead during funerals to say goodbye, which is how most people are getting the virus now in Liberia and other West African nations.
