The problem that I don't think has been discussed enough in the media regarding the Iraqi Army is that most officers are Sunni because they often were trained by Saddam Hussein especially at higher levels. So, there isn't the loyalty among Sunni Officers because of the way Maliki treated Sunnis in Iraq. So, many Sunni Officers, because of how Sunnis were and are being treated in Iraq, might find themselves feeling a higher level of loyalty to ISIS or the Islamic State (which is an extremist Sunni Group) than they have to the Government of IRaq which is still primarily a Shia ruled Group with powerful influence of Iran upon the Government of Iraq.
So, many Sunni Officers, especially at higher levels might see the IRaq Government as being an Iran Puppet and remember the 1980s were spent by the Iraqi Army in a life or death war with Iran. So, there are many axes to grind here as well.
So, that the Iraqi Army collapses like this shouldn't be considered strange as Sunni Officers defect to ISIS and the Islamic State when push comes to shove.
I don't think this has been properly addressed in the news because it is too confusing for most people to understand.
However, without this understanding, it doesn't make a lot of sense when people write or report about stuff like this.
So, in the end it is only the Shia militias whose Officers and soldiers that are all Shia 100% that likely can be counted on 100% to defend Baghdad and other southern Iraqi cities.
IF people don't understand about the Sunni officers hating the government of Iraq because of the ways it has abused, killed and imprisoned Sunnis unfairly then the whole thing makes no sense at all when you read it in a newspaper.
