What appears to be happening is that Russia is striking ISIS' enemies that it fights with that are allied with Turkey, Saudi Arabia and the U.S. who want Assad overthrown.
So, what Russia is actually doing is upsetting the balance of power and as Secretary of Defense of the U.S. said, "It is like throwing Gasoline on a fire".
So, what likely will happen is ISIS and Assad's forces and Russia are "Wiping out" rebels who want to see Assad Gone withe missiles in Idlib today and in Homs yesterday.
So, Putin is wiping out opposition to Assad staying in power but not attacking ISIS at all. And while Russia flies it's planes the U.S. , Nato and Sunni nation cannot fly their planes and attack ISIS because they don't want to get into it with Russian planes.
The problem here is eventually one of the Sunni governments likely will get into it with Russian warplanes which could be really bad. American warplanes are more disciplined from "Cold War" rules which by the way Putin is NOT playing by. Cold War rules by the way have prevented a nuclear holocaust and the death of earth as a planet ever since World War II. So, why isn't Putin playing by these rules?
One can only assume that he doesn't believe nuclear weapons will be used. However, he may be wrong because a lot of people worldwide are really upset at what he is doing right now.
So, the result likely of the last two days of Russian Air strikes is that ISIS and Assad's army likely will finish off Syrian rebels who want Assad gone and who want democracy in Syria.
Or something like that.
By the way I'm pretty sure Russian planes dropped Cluster bombs yesterday and possibly today. There is a way they look which looks like a whole lot of little puffs of smoke when they hit the ground. Cluster bombs kill everything living within a square mile of where they hit, human, bird or animal.
