It is interesting to me that the worst defeat of democracy in the recent middle east goes mostly unreported in the U.S. or Europe simply because we must protect our soldiers and airmen in Turkey at Incirlik and other places there so they can continue to defeat ISIS in Syria and Iraq, especially in Raqqa and Mosul.
I suppose, "The enemy of my enemy is my friend" would be the logic here, even though we just witnessed the defense of democracy fail in the latest coup. On the surface the U.S. government is saying, "We must defend the democratically elected leaders in Turkey". The problem with this statement is that the Turkish Democracy just collapsed with this coup.
Now Erdogan has an excuse to round up everyone who wants a secular democracy rather than a Islamic State dictatorship and imprison or kill them.
It is the exact opposite of what has happened in the last few years in Egypt where Morsi was put in jail and may be executed now and the military took over.
So, to prevent the military from doing the same thing to him in Turkey, Erdogan just staged this coup so he can arrest everyone who wants a secular democracy and who doesn't want Erdogan as a dictator ruling the country.
The basic way to say this is Erdogan is ONLY a Sunni Version of Iran at this point. HE is a Dictator now and as far away from Europe and the U.S. as you can get. It's like playing shadow puppets in that he is projecting his shadow as someone working with Europe and the U.S. while actually being something like the leader of Iran now, only a Sunni version of this.
You could say that Iran is the Shia Islamic State of Iran.
But, now you can also say, "Turkey is the Sunni Islamic state of Turkey with Sharia Law now in place.
With the imprisoning of all opposition to Erdogan done after this week all human rights of Turkish people are gone. If you see their grief it might be that about 1/2 of the people just lost their country to a dictator. However, if they speak out at this point they will be imprisoned or worse. So, people are now very quiet in Turkey because if they are secular and not wanting an Islamic state, they just lost everything.
So, I think over the next 6 months you are going to see more and more Turkish people trying to sneak away to Europe or somewhere, anywhere there are democratic rights and freedoms. First, you will see the rich try to get away and then likely you will see the poor on boats try to get away too.
