A candidate running for Congress in North Carolina says a Russian bought a web domain she used for another campaign two years ago.
Democrat Linda Coleman, who is running for a seat in the House, said her staff learned about the alleged Russian meddling after Google searched her name last week, the News and Observer reported.
A web address for Coleman’s 2016 lieutenant governor campaign page popped up in the search. The page links to another page promoting male performance enhancement drugs in a foreign language.
A Russian man who lives in Moscow bought the domain in January, according to the newspaper.
Coleman explained she didn’t renew her domain because she was running for another office. She also urged other candidates to be “vigilant” about possible campaign meddling.
“I don't know for what purpose this website was created,” Coleman said. “We all need to be wary and protect ourselves from similar attempts to deceive our voters and the general public.”
MVAR Media appears at the bottom of Coleman’s page, but a company statement to WTVD-TV said it doesn’t manage her site.
“We can't speak to why she allowed her domain name to expire. The version of the site up now appears to be a copy obtained from Archive.org of an old website we created for her 2016 Lieutenant Governor's campaign,” the statement reads.
