I was studying Cultural Anthropology at Palomar College in San Marco near San Diego around 1971 or 1972 then.
The definition of a shaman in our college textbook described me perfectly. It said something like :"A Shaman is someone who has psychologically died but whose body still lives on for some reason. However, because of the Psychological "death" of the person they live both in the world of the living and the world of the dead at the same time.
Since then I realized that all good ministers of any religion and all good doctors and nurses who can actually heal you are natural shamen too.
The reason they can heal is that they see and feel both the physical world and the world people go to after they pass on. So, because of this they can more effectively heal people because of what they discover as shamen.
You either get good at this or you die when you become a shaman because it is a very different way of being than most people experience. It can be both powerful beyond belief and sometimes terrifying to some people beyond belief. But, those that survive often become the healers of mankind because they understand how both worlds interface in everyone's lives.
