Your Vow of Ahimsa has a profound impact on the cosmic psyche of peace. We must stop the bleeding. We must stop the hurting. We must stop the killing.
I first realized that Ahimsa Vows existed in the 1970s but didn't know much about them. Then in the early 1980s I took these vows. However, I really got going on practicing these vows when I worked 6 months a year for 2 years (1985 and 1986) as a Fire Lookout for CDF here in California. The reason this vow became more profound then is that there was no screen door on Call Mountain Lookout near Pacinas and Hollister in California at 4000 feet elevation. Then it is up about 30 to 40 feet high off the ground when you are in a fire lookout. Then the front door on top of the lookout is usually kept open because there was no air conditioner there and there is no screen on the front door during the warm summer days. Then you have windows in all directions because you are looking in all directions during the days for fires and lightning strikes. So, bees and hornets and flies are always coming inside because they smell the food there that you might be eating or cooking for meals. I realized (taught by my alternate lookout) (we were there 1/2 a week at a time). I learned that it is much easier to take a fly or a hornet or bee outside of the lookout with a plastic cup with a piece of paper covering it up than to smash a bee or hornet or fly with a fly swatter and all the work it takes to clean up that mess. So, this more than anything else got me into the habit of never killing bees, hornets or flies that came into my lookout. This way I also didn't have to clean the windows of the 360 glass windows either. So, this became the place of learning fully about not killing anything ever (except in self defense).
