The Order of the Garter dates back nearly seven centuries. Even when King Edward III founded the Order, he was inspired by King Arthur's Knights of the Round Table—then, already ancient history.
These days, the Order has changed a bit to fit the modern monarchy. Whereas only blue-blooded men were once allowed to be knights, women and non-aristocrats are now among the Order's ranks. Of course, on the annual Garter Day celebration at Windsor Castle,
the royal family is still front and center, lead by
Queen Elizabeth.
