Why is it useful to have compassion for yourself and others?
Because it will tend to lengthen your life.
Why?
Because if you are happy you tend to stay alive longer and you tend to treat your children and friends and relatives better and this tends to make them happy too. So, developing compassion for yourself and others tends to make everyone happier and to make their lives better as well as your own. So, learning to develop compassion for all beings lengthens your lives and all you know.
Whereas if you foster hatred or fear towards others it does the opposite and people often tend to be either dead or crazy by ages 20 or 30 worldwide and often their children die young (if they are born too).
However, it is also true that you usually have to go somewhere on earth where it is peaceful enough for you to be able to do this successfully alone or with your family in order for this to work also.
So, developing compassion can also be seen as an engineering feat of moving yourself and your families if possible to a place where this can more easily be done. And in this way you lengthen the lives and educations of all in your family which tends to make everyone's lives better ongoing wherever you are on earth.
