When I looked for the time I was surprised it was so late 9:45 pm when the fireworks were going to go off even though Sunset was 8:46 pm. However, my friend said it takes about an hour after sunset to get dark here in the mountains this time of year. So, about 9 pm we all headed for the lake.
There are many ways to do this. For example, some people launch boats and kayaks and watch it from on the lake itself as long as they are away from the blasts and smoke enough to be safe. Also, I remember one year I did this from a kayak and debris from the blasts in the air would rain down upon you and make you cough so I wasn't interested in doing that again.
So, this year we drove over by the Dam of Lake Siskiyou and watched it from there. There is another way people are doing this now which is to go to the country club near the lake and pay $2 per person to watch from the golf course there. We decided not to do this because of the terrible 2 hour traffic jam this creates in getting back to town. However, it is true that the $2 per person helps pay for the fireworks you see over the lake. But, it seems to me maybe send them a donation for the fireworks rather than be caught in traffic back to the town until midnight.
Also, if you are going near the dam to watch the fireworks remember to face your car or truck when you park towards the town of Mt. Shasta so you don't have to turn around into a traffic jam back towards the little City of Mt. Shasta. So, for us, we left town at 9 pm and were able to get back to where we started in town by 11pm including all traffic. If you are coming from the Country Club it could be midnight before you get back to town from the lake after the fireworks.
By the way the fireworks were great. Very impressive!
