Police deaths in the line of duty versus suicides in 2017
129 deaths in the line of duty
140 suicides
Both police officers and firemen are more likely to die of suicide than in the line of duty. This is caused by the level of PTSD that they experience on the job.
Firefighters in 2017
93 deaths in the line of duty
103 suicides
The high exposure to death and trauma can lead to several forms of mental illness, especially PTSD.
As a result police and firemen suffer depression and PTSD at 5 times the rate of the civilian population.
