The other couple and we both made it home about 11:30 last night even though we landed in the Bay area and their last landing was Medford, Oregon on their way to Mt. Shasta which is their home. The flight was nice and I noticed that the sun set about mid way between the time it would have set in Hawaii to the time it would have set on the mainland because we were going the opposite direction of the sun likely somewhere about 600 miles per hour or about half the speed of the spinning of the earth. So, when the sun set it was about 5:20 Hawaii time because we were halfway between Maui and the Mainland.
It's good to come home especially because the weather is clear and about 79 degrees out right now (obviously global warming) because normally it would be a minimum of 10 to 15 degrees colder than that where I live this time of year. Usually by November between Halloween and Thanksgiving is our coldest time of the year I would say. But, likely not this year in Global warming. We stay warmer usually between December and the end of January usually because Cloud cover holds in the heat more so we usually stay between 40 and 65 degrees between December and the end of January mostly here on the northern California coast. But, inland it is much much hotter both in Summer and fall and also much much colder inland in Winter too away from the ocean where we live.
So, anyway it was the clearest water for snorkeling I have ever seen on Maui on Lahaina Side even though the fire messed up a lot of people flying in or out or getting to their travel destinations this week. However, we knew about it but by the time we wanted to get to our planes off the islands we were able to do it with just a few puffs of smoke with fire engines mopping up the fires still running underground on root systems for the next week or so.
The water visibility where we were in Napili was 50 to 75 feet and some places 100 feet visibility which from my experience I had never experienced before on Maui even when I lived there in 1989 except maybe in McKenna Beach in that area where 100 feet visibility or more is more normal I found then.
So, this time it was a complete snorkeler's paradise on Maui on the Lahaina side of the island.
It's really wonderful now that you can fly direct to Lihue on Kauai or Kahului on Maui or back to the mainland on a 737 regularly now from the SF Bay Area or anywhere in Los Angeles or San Diego or Portland or Seattle. This makes flying to Kauai and to Maui really convenient for anyone on the west coast of the U.S.
