- In 1980 our solution to our lighting problem was Aladdin Kerosene lamps, especially if you want to read and not damage your eyes trying to read by candle light. However, you can buy reflectors for candles that double the light towards your book too or just use some aluminum foil in creative ways as well to reflect more light back. However, if you are going to go outside with a candle you need a candle camping lantern so the storms and winds don't blow it out when you go outside. Candles always sort of make me nervous even if I was tent camping because you don't want to melt your tent with the heat of the candle. However, a tent might stay warm (if the winds aren't too high) just from a candle as well. One trick I used was to get a piece of bark for my tent and drip candle wax on the bark to make the candle stick to it which helps keep the candle away from the edge or top of the tent which avoids setting your tent on fire. But, also if you have a candle lantern inside your tent this also tends to help prevent fires in your tent too. I have hung candle lanterns from a hook at the top of my tent on a chain and that was pretty safe I found unless I fell asleep reading and burned my candle all the way down and then I was upset I didn't have a candle maybe the next night camping. So, be sure to take candle lantern Candle refills when you back pack in the back country like in the Sierras or Rockies like that.
