Having been raised a Conservative Republican in the 1950s by my father and Grandfather I think I can usefully speak to this even though I have been an independent now since around the time Nixon resigned as president because Senator Goldwater (a Senate Republican) told him to.
But, the problem now is different than most people might think. I suppose the problem goes back to Roe V Wade when educated white women started to use the birth control pill, went to college and stopped getting pregnant and other groups (besides white people) had more and more babies.
This created more non-white people in the U.S. than white people so that there are no longer enough White Republicans to win elections for president realistically. So, voter suppression has been used more and more by Republicans by threatening other races in various ways not to come out and vote or to nullify their votes.
But, we have finally reached a point where democracy really cannot work anymore for White people who want to be the power base here in the U.S.
If you think historically about the U.S. the White Race has ALWAYS been on top of the power here in the U.S. since the 1600s when they first came here. How many non-white presidents have their been? One. Obama, which totally freaked out white racists in the power base ever since and so they put a criminal, Trump in place and why they accept Putin manipulating Trump like they do and spouting only lies.
It's all about maintaining the White Voting ONLY power base of the White Race since the 1600s. This is what it is actually all about. So, Republicans are now willing to tell any lie they need to to stay in power no matter what. From everything I learned growing up a Conservative Republican until I left the Republican party when Nixon resigned, this is what is actually going on and it's pretty obvious (even though horrifying) for me to watch.
