Marcelo and Lila in My Brilliant Friend- Spoiler Alert!

If you haven't watched: "My Brilliant Friend" which is in Italian with Subtitles on HBO don't read this. But, if you have kept up with the show and are up to date this might be useful to you. Or if you don't plan to ever watch this show this also might be useful to you.

Marcelo and Lila demonstrate the problems you saw a lot just after World War II in marriages.

The main problem is if a man is successful he usually isn't very emotionally available in his marriage.  Women often make the mistake of thinking that a successful man they are going to be happy with. But, this isn't going to be true usually emotionally because a successful man is successful because he puts all his energy into his success.

So, I would say this is the main problem of women thinking they can get a successful man and be emotionally happy with that kind of man. But, that kind of man is a good provider financially but not going to be emotionally what you want.

It is a very very rare man that is emotionally accessible and financially successful at the same time which is why there are so many divorces around the world.

However, if both the man and the woman are successful this might work as long as they choose to live in the same location. Because then both of them are driven by their careers and they better understand each other.

Whereas Marcelo and Lila are not really suited to each other (at least in the beginning) because Lila just feels used and raped in her marriage and is unhappy. But, over time she gets more and more twisted by her marriage and becomes more and more like Marcelo so she just kind of goes nuts because the world isn't one she can emotionally survive in with her brilliance intellectually.

She is just too intelligent for the world that she finds herself in and that is destroying her as well as her marriage.

There is pragmatism and then there is idealism and there is a fine balance between the two which allows a person to mentally and to physically survive in this world and it is a very difficult balance for each of us to attain.

It's called enlightenment.
