There are very few animals that will stalk a human being here in the U.S.
But, the thing you have to realize is that ALL animals will protect their young from humans any way they can. So, you always give all animals with babies a very wide berth for this reason.
But, the one animal known to actually stalk human beings (other than other humans) is the mountain Lion or Cougar and cougars tend to live in all the western states often even in the deserts.
So, how do you know when one is stalking you. For me, because I'm very instinctual like my father and grandfather I usually know because I can feel their minds stalking me. It's when you get random thoughts that aren't in your normal mind stream of something interested in jumping on your back and biting the back of your neck. It's then you need to be cautious because often something like a cougar is stalking you. When this happens I like to look back where I sense this is coming from simply because a cougar doesn't want you to know he or she is there at all. Only if they can attack you without your knowledge will they usually do this. So, when you look back for them (even if you cannot see them) which is their style you dissuade them from stalking and attacking you.
What do you do when you sense this?
You do not want to be running or riding a bike because that is the easiest way to get attacked or die. You want to be walking slowly and deliberately like you are powerful like an animal would. You want to be looking back at where you sense this animal is. You want to go immediately to where other people are and civilization is. You want to go inside a house or business nearby or into your vehicle or into a bus.
This is the best way to prevent attack. But, start with looking carefully and somewhat threateningly towards where you sense they are first. This will tend to dissuade their attack most. The problem is once a cougar commits to attacking you often then it is too late to avoid injury or death of you or the animal.
So, you are actually lengthening the cats life that you let it know that you know it is there so to prevent it wanting to attack you so it doesn't feel safe enough to do this.
Bears don't want to attack you usually unless they are Grizzly bears and even then they don't want to eat you. People don't taste good to bears or cougars usually. So, even if a cougar attacks you it is unlikely to eat all of you unless it is a very old cougar or a very young cougar inexperience with hunting live game.
But, the biggest problem is people not realizing that they need to keep their distance from animals with babies, especially deer, moose, Elk and the like. Females of these species will maim or kill humans almost instantaneously if they get to near their babies.
Strangely enough, Buffalo or American Bison kill more people than any other animal in the U.S.
A Buffalo is not tame. It is not a cow or a steer. They have survived thousands and thousands of years just like they are. Only humans with a rifle are their enemies really.
If you are dumb enough to get too close to a male that is the head of the herd he will kill you or your children within 5 to 10 seconds time. They will butt you down and then stomp your head or chest and that's it. Very quick. Rhinos do this too in the wilds and I had to run from them in the Terai in Nepal in 1986 and climb a tree to survive them. I never did get a good picture of them but at least I didn't die then along with my wife. This was at Royal Chitwan National Park.
My wife and children and I rode the elephants like the people in the pictures along the river there too.
Being up on the Elephant riding that way you were safe from the Rhinos and Tigers then in 1986 too.
