In the 1950s and early 1960s there were many family oriented shows on TV

Ozzie and Harriet

Donna Reid Show

Father Knows Best

Life with Father

All of these shows tended to reinforce the nuclear family here in the U.S. in many different ways. Even if you didn't have more than either your father or your mother left alive or with you you could watch one or more of these programs and understand better what a family could or might be. So, in this sense they were very helpful to people then in the 1950s and 1960s and helped stabilize a whole generation of people still reeling from World War II and the Korean War and the Hydrogen bombs that people were very scared of then.

Then there were more off beat family shows like:

Bewitched (which was about a mother and a daughter who were witches with supernatural powers (a comedy) but the Dad was there too but wasn't magical like the mother and daughter were Samantha was the mother and Tabitha was the daughter in this show.

And the Munsters who were a strange family where Mr. Munster was a Frankenstein and other members of the family were all sorts of strange things too. this was also a comedy.

Then there was the Addams Family which I believe was another spinoff sort of the Munsters on another network.
