It's because Kindness and Compassion is the very essence of civilization itself. When you choose this path life which is much more aware at every level that most people give life credit for, can trust you with infinite compassionate power based upon your demonstrated kindness to yourself and all beings in your life.
Life watches us all all the time whether we are aware of this or not and we are judged by rule systems none of us would believe even exist in everything from plants to animals to trees to fish to birds to hawks.
And each being whether it be the walls in your home, your bathroom, the stars, the galaxy, the bedroom, the kitchen, the hallway, your car or truck, the planes you ride in, the trains you ride in, the ships and boats you ride in the waters, the mountains, etc. etc. etc. watches you and judges you according to it's own beliefs of reality.
From my point of view the entire awareness of the conscious universe is actually God. When you are aware of all this you act entirely differently because you know your life or death in any moment is governed entirely by the Life Force of the entire universe in any and all moments.
So, your love and respect for life in all it's forms in the universe governs when you live and governs when you die and governs how and when you will suffer. Understanding all this, a love and respect for life in all it's forms is in your enlightened self interest.
