If you look carefully at the top left map you can click on it and it should enlarge to reveal that the dark blue is 10 to 20 feet deep water, the middle blue is 3 to 10 feet deep and the light blue is under 3 feet deep. These depths continued in 1862 for around 6 months in the Sacramento area to where the capitol was moved by boat (because no usable roads for 6 months) to San Francisco by moving down the Sacramento River to San Francisco then in 1862.
