So, you have the VERY RICH of New York City of that same era and then you have the poorer people who survived then dying at random trying to get to "Free Land" in Oregon then as well. So, if you watch the HBO Series "The Gilded Age" and then watch "1883" just realize both these things were happening in the same era of U.S. History just in different parts of the country. One is the very rich and one is the poorer people just trying to stay alive and settling the country.
Or if you were rich enough you could also then buy a train ticket to the West Coast. You just couldn't easily take your stuff with you like you could with a wagon Train. Taking the Train from New York to San Francisco then would likely be like buying a 1st class ticket to fly to Europe or something now from San Francisco by Air, price wise as to how expensive it would be then.
