Carmel and River Fires Aug 21: Carmel and River fires move toward Carmel Valley

Latest update: The River Fire was last reported as 42,583-acres and was 12% contained. The Carmel Fire was last reported as 5,069-acres and 5% contained.
An estimated 20,000 people have been placed under either evacuation orders or warnings for these two fires.

The River Fire burning south of Salinas and the Carmel Fire burning east of Carmel Valley have created a series of evacuations as they burn less than two miles from each other. As of Friday afternoon the fires had not merged.
The River Fire was last reported as 42,583-acres and was 12% contained. The Carmel Fire was last reported as 5,069-acres and 5% contained. Ten structures were destroyed in the River Fire and 28 in the Carmel Fire. Two structures have been damaged in each fire.
More than 3,000 structures are threatened between the two fires.

Evacuation orders have been issued for the following locations:
River Fire Specifically
- Pine Canyon Road, Parker Road, Laurel Lane, and Trimble Hill Lane
- West of River Road from Parker Road, South to Limekiln Road to include Limekiln Road
- Southwest of Parker Road, northwest of Corral De Cielo Road, and Rana Creek
- Southwest of the intersection Chualar River Road, and River Road
- Northwest of Limekiln Road/Creek
- West of River Road from Limekiln Road to Gonzales River Road
- All areas south of Highway 68, east of San Benancio Road to include San Benancio Road south to Harper Canyon Road
- Harper Canyon area, all areas north of San Benancio Road, west of Troy Lane, southeast of Harper Canyon Road, to include Harper Canyon Road, Weather Rock Way, and Rimrock Canyon Road
- South of River Road from Tara Drive to Pine Canyon Road to include all roads off of Las Palmas Parkway, Ranchito Drive, Indian Springs Road, Berry Drive, Enos Drive, Redding Drive, and Belmont Circle Southeast of the intersection of Chualar River Road and River Road, northwest of Limekiln
- All areas south within the intersection of Hwy 68 and River Road to Tara Drive and Hwy 68 south to San Benancio Road, including the Los Palmas 1 and 117 Drive Communities. This order does not include the Toro Regional Main Park area.
- West of River Road extending west to Carmel Valley Road
- West of River Road south from Gonzales River Road to Puma Road
- East of Carmel Valley Road from south of Tassajara Road to Finch Creek
- All areas from Corral de Tierra Road and Underwood Road extending south to Tassajara Road

- Nason Road South from Cachuaga Road
- Cachagua Road from Asoleado Drive to Tassajara Road to include Asoleado Drive, Comsat Road, Trampa Canyon Road and all tributaries
- Tassajara Road from Miller Canyon to East Carmel Valley Road to include Chew’s Ridge, Kincannon Road, Lambert Flat, Parrot Ranch Road and tributaries
- East of Cachagua Road between Sky Ranch and Via Cielo, including Sky Ranch, Tributaries, and Via Cielo.
- Residents east of Cachagua Road between Summerhill Road and Asoleado Drive including Summerhill, Nason, Asoleado Drive and Tributaries.
- Tassajara Road including the community of Jamesburg, Parrot Ranch Road, Laurel ---Spring Road, Kincannon Road, Sage Mountain Road, Lambert, Poppy Tree, Tributaries, and Tassajara Road from Cachagua Road to East Carmel Valley Road.
- Extension of evacuation from Cachagua Road north to Klondike Canyon Road on East Carmel Valley Road to include Klondike Canyon Road, and all roads and communities northeast and southwest of East Carmel Valley Road.
- The forested unpopulated areas east of San Clemente Reservoir south along Carmel River and Pine Creek to Big Pine Road and Los Padres Reservoir.
- All areas south of Corral de Tierra Road and Underwood Road extending south to Tassajara Road, not to include Corral de Tierra Road and Underwood Road

- All areas east of Carmel Valley Road extending south from finch Creek to Arroyo Seco Road
- West of River Road extending west to Carmel Valley Road
- West of Carmel Valley Road from Klondike Canyon Road to Pine Tree Lane extending south to Dormody Road and east to Hitchcock Canyon Road and San Clemente Drive.
- All communities on Carmel Valley Road
- All communities southwest of Carmel Valley Road between Klondike Canyon and Pine Tree Lane, including Carmel Valley Village, Robles Del Rio.
- East of Carmel Valley Road, north to Laureless Grade, east of Laureles Grade to Highway 68 to include areas west of San Benancio Road and the Corral de Tierra community.
- South of Highway 68 from San Benancio Road to Laureles Grade. To include all roads east of Laureles Grade at La Rancheria Road to the south, and all areas west of San Benancio Road.
- West on Carmel Valley road from Klondike Canyon Road to Laureles Grade, North on Laureles Grade from Carmel Valley Road to La Rancheria.
- All communities North East of Carmel Valley Road, and all communities East of Laureles Grade to include Carmel Valley Road, Laureles Grade, La Rancheria and all tributary roads
River Fire Specifically
- Indian Canyon, Mt. Toro Access Road and San Benancio Road from Troy Lane to Corral de Tierra, including Corral del Cielo Road, Lucie Lane, and Covie Lane
- Areas North of Highway 68 from Portola Drive and Veronica Drive/Estoque Place east, to include all roads off of Portola Drive to Creekside Court
- West of River Road south from Gonzales River Road to Puma Road
- All areas west of River Road and For Romie Road and Arroyo Seco Road extending South to Elm Avenue and Arroyo Seco Road
- Northwest of Limekiln Road/Creek
- Southeast of the intersection Chualar River Road, and River Road
Carmel Fire Specifically
- None at this time.
Evacuation Resources
Monterey County, in collaboration with the American Red Cross, is offering evacuation centers and evacuation shelters to meet the needs of fire evacuees.
Evacuation Shelters:
- An evacuation shelter is open at Carmel Middle School, 4380 Carmel Valley Road.
- Sherwood Hall in Salinas as an evacuation shelter
The shelter will be open 24 hours, has the capacity to provide meals and sleeping accommodations.
Evacuation Centers:
- Monterey County Library Branch in King City
- Monterey Conference Center, 1 Portola Plaza in Monterey, near Pacific Avenue
The centers are open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and offers evacuees water, snacks and a rest stop to make further plans or find out about assistance offered by the American Red Cross.
To access the shelter, evacuees must provide proof of residency in the fire evacuation zone, whether it is a current ID, bill, statement or vehicle registration.
Animals can be evacuated to the SPCA Monterey County. As of Monday evening, they were housing 11 dogs, 13 cats and three birds. Call the SPCA at 831-264-5455 if you need assistance.

Road Closures
River Road between Highway 68 and Chualar River Road
According to Caltrans, Highway 101 and Highway 68 remain open in the area but they advise drivers to use caution due to a change in traffic and the presence of emergency vehicles.
Canceled School
- Carmel Unified School District: All in-person and virtual activities and programs canceled for Wednesday, Aug. 19 through Friday, Aug. 21.
- Early Learning Program Sites (all 24 centers) for the Monterey County Office of Education Early Learning Program will be closed on Thursday, Aug. 20 and Friday, Aug. 21 due to poor air quality in the region.
- Monterey Peninsula Unified School District: Marina Child Development Center and Seaside Child Development Center will be closed on Thursday, Aug. 20 and Friday, Aug. 21.
- Salinas Union High School District: Due to evacuations in the South Salinas area caused by the River Fire, all classes are canceled for ONLY Salinas High School and Washington Middle School on Aug. 20 and 21. Classes are anticipated to resume on Monday, Aug. 24. However, if the fires continue to pose threats in the community, the community will be informed of any changes.
- Santa Rita School District will close all offices to staff on Friday, Aug. 21. Distance learning WILL STILL TAKE PLACE IN THE DISTRICT. Employees will be working remotely.
- Spreckels Union School District: The first day of school (originally scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 19) has been postponed to Monday, Aug. 24.
- Washington Union School District: All in-person and virtual activities and programs canceled for Monday, Aug. 17 through Friday, Aug. 21. Updates will be provided for next week at a later time.

A group of fires burning in southern San Mateo County and Santa Cruz counties has led to thousands of people being evacuated. (This article will only cover the evacuations in Santa Cruz County, to learn about the San Mateo County evacuations, click here.)

The fires from the CZU Lightning Complex started Sunday from lightning strikes. Since then, more than 57,000 acres have burned as of Friday evening. The fire is 2% contained.
According to Cal Fire, more than 77,000 people have been evacuated from both counties and 97 structures have been confirmed destroyed. Another 24,300 structures are threatened. Three firefighters suffered minor injures.

- Waterman Gap Loop, Upper HWY 236, Boulder Creek Golf Course, Heartwood Hill, Lodge Road, Community of Little Basin, Lower China Grade, Upper China Grade, Community of Kings Hwy, Lower Jamison Creek, Gallion Heights, Fallen Leaf Neighborhood, Foxglove Lane (Zones CRZ10, CRZ13, BOU36, BOU20, BOU30, BOU31, BOU36, BOU37, BOU21)
- Saratoga Toll Road, San Lorenzo Park, Riverside Grove-Community of Teilh Drive, Wildwood Road (BOU38, BOU39, BOU40, BOU41, BOU42, BOU43)
- Everyone on Empire Grade Road, from Felton Empire north, all of Pine Flat Road, all of Ice Cream Grade, Bonny Doon Road, in between Pine Flat Road, Martin Road, and all associated side streets are under an evacuation order. (CRZ1, CRZ2, CRZ3, CRZ4, CRZ5, CRZ10, CRZ11, CRZ12, CRZ13, CRZ14, CRZ15)

- Vicinity of Davenport south to the city limits. This includes Davenport, Davenport Landing and Coast Road.
- Ben Lomond
- All areas of Felton, this includes all FEL Zones. (Zones: FEL 1, FEL 2, FEL 3, FEL 4, FEL 5, FEL 6)
- The area of Zayante Canyon, all ZAY Zones. (Zones: ZAY 1- ZAY 17)
- Scotts Valley area west of Highway 17
- All Scott’s Valley residents West of State Route 17 (Zones: SCO 1-5, SCO 7, SCO 14-20 SCO 21 - SCO 25)
- The Santa Cruz County area east of Zayante Canyon, west of State Route 17 and south of State Route 35 (Zones: CRZ 18, CRZ 19, CRZ 20)
- University of California Santa Cruz, campus only (Zone: SCZ 4)
- Paradise Park (Zones: CRZ 63, CRZ 64)
Residents evacuating in Santa Cruz County listed above are being told to leave south on Highway 236 towards Boulder Creek then access Highway 9 south to Santa Cruz. Or south on Highway 1.

- Santa Cruz Bible Church, 440 Frederick St., Santa Cruz. Room for 76 evacuees as well as parking.
- Congregational Church of Soquel (parking only), 4951 Soquel Dr., Soquel. Bathrooms available for evacuees.
- Twin Lakes Church (parking only), 2701 Cabrillo College Dr., Aptos. Up to 50 cars and RV’s, bathrooms, water and food available.
- Cabrillo College Lot K (parking only), 6500 Soquel Dr., Apto
- Parking lot and grounds of Coastlands Aptos Foursquare Church, 280 State Park Dr., Aptos. Open to cars, RV’s and tents. (Limited tents available on site).
- Gymnasium of Cabrillo College, 6500 Soquel Dr., Aptos. Congregate shelter.
- ADA-compliant: Simpkins Family Swim Center, 979 17th Ave., Santa Cruz. Room for 25 evacuees.
