First reason, overpopulation worldwide and markedly reduced clean water and tillable land worldwide which grows smaller daily because as more houses are built on land that was once farmed there is then less soil to grow food on worldwide. This lack of enough tillable land and good consistent water to grow food makes food more and more expensive worldwide every day. This increase in expense likely causes about 10 million people now per year to die of starvation and every year into the future slowly increasing in number every year.
2nd reason: Glaciers and snowpacks are melting worldwide. Why would this matter? Because many areas of the Earth cannot farm enough of the year without a melting snowpack to provide a more constant source of water to the rivers streams and brooks.
3rd reason: Global Warming and Global Climate change has disrupted many areas of the world in regard food because of increased flooding, increased floods, increased droughts etc. However, of all these things too much heat and drought causes the most long term damage to the capacity to grow food and through the reduction of wildlife during long lasting droughts worldwide.
4th reason here in the United States. All the protections for individual investors big and small have been removed throughout the Reagan, Bushes and Clinton Administrations and they have not been put back in place during the Obama Administration. So, until another Glass Steagle act is put in place (or something like it corporations and individuals are going to be sitting on a whole lot of cash that they don't presently feel safe investing almost anywhere at present because they are not stupid.
5th reason is that a gridlocked congress is the recipe for large banks and large investors to make a whole lot of money. However, a gridlocked congress is hell for everyone else. So, it is important to know that a gridlocked congress is by design by the biggest investors both individual and corporate.
Another reason is that honeybees are now dying worldwide at an alarming rate. However, even though many people suspect it is GMO pollen on crops and insecticides on crops and herbicides on Crops, the corporations who make GMO Crops, insecticides and herbicides have enough money to drown out the voices of people trying to get the word out. However, the end result likely will be no bees to pollinate crops so no food for people on Earth (or something similar to this the way things are presently going).
So, the end result might actually be someone has to manufacture robot bees to pollinate crops before everyone dies from no food pollinated. Virtually everything we eat, including the meat and milk we drink has to eat things pollinated to live. So, without pollinated food no one will be alive. Also, the seas are getting fished out quite fast in most places so that won't be available soon at the present rate either.
So, likely a slowly or quickly coming rude awakening for mankind is on the way when food runs out in the sea from overfishing and on land from no bees.
My thought is more wild bee strains should be domesticated because only by using wild bees now can we rebuild the bee stocks because the wild bees are heartier and stronger than the domesticated ones genetically at present. The domesticated bees have been weakened by inbreeding over the years worldwide.
These are the least talked about reasons recovery isn't more robust in the U.S. and all these factors affect recoveries throughout the world in the future. Because the world is more interdependent than it has ever been before.
