TWO workers have been killed and 20 others injured in a mining accident in the US state of Colorado.
Ouray County spokeswoman Marti Whitmore says the sheriff's office
was called to the Revenue Virginius silver mine about 7.20am on Sunday
(0020 AEDT Monday). The two miners were trapped underground, and they were confirmed dead on Sunday afternoon.
Star Mine Operations, the owner of the mine, could not be reached for comment, but Whitmore says the company has accounted for all of the workers at the site.
She says 20 people were taken to area hospitals in the southwestern Colorado town of Ouray, and all but two have been treated and released.
The circumstances of the accident and the conditions of the hospitalised workers have not been released.
Local news portal OurayNews.com reported an explosion was the cause of the accident. Mine manager Rory Williams reportedly said the injuries were a result of miners breathing in gases and chemicals in the air following a blast.
