Two sisters who were found dead Friday in their East Liberty home
died of single gunshot wounds to the head, according to the Allegheny
County medical examiner.
Dr. Karl Williams said that Susan Wolfe, 44, and Sarah Wolfe, 38, had "other injuries" but that those injuries did not contribute to the women's deaths. He declined to elaborate. "I'm not willing to talk about their other injuries other than to say that they did not contribute to their deaths," Dr. Williams said. He would not answer whether the women were sexually assaulted.
They were pronounced dead at 1:48 p.m. Friday, shortly after their bodies were discovered in the unfinished basement of their home in the 700 block of Chistlett Street.
Dr. Williams said that the autopsies on the women's bodies did not reveal precise times of death. "The range I would give you would be so broad. The time of death is going to come from the police investigation," he said. The autopsies were conducted on Saturday then the bodies were reexamined today, he said.
The medical examiner's office has not released a time frame for the sisters' actual time of death.
Meanwhile, Pittsburgh Police Major Crimes Lt. Daniel Herrmann said police are asking the public for information about anything that may have been seen or heard between the hours of 5 and 9 p.m. near the sisters' home or near where their car was discovered about a mile away. "We're asking anyone in the East Liberty area or Highland Park to call us if they can give us a piece of the puzzle. We're particularly interested in Thursday evening, say between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m.," he said. The telephone number for the homicide squad is 412-323-7161.
The lieutenant said police have been able to identify video cameras in the vicinity and are working to pull information from those cameras.
The Wolfe sisters were found dead in the basement of their 93-year-old home after a co-worker of Susan asked police to check her well-being when she did not come to work at the Hillel Academy in Squirrel Hill where she was a teacher's aide.
Sarah Wolfe was a UPMC pediatrician and psychiatrist.
About 1:15 a.m. Saturday, Pittsburgh police learned that the lime green 2011 Ford Fiesta belonging to Sarah Wolfe was parked on South Whitfield Street between Penn Avenue and Baum Boulevard in Friendship, about a mile away from the sisters' home that was purchased in December.
“We believe the murderer took the car (from the house,)” said George Trosky, assistant chief of the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police.
