With Russia more interested in what happens to Ukraine and Estonia and Crimea than what actually happens to Syria, yes, Syria could become a failed state which will upset the balance of power in the Middle East in various ways.
Right now, as a nation, Qatar is a primary funder of both ISIS and Hamas in the middle East. Because of this other nations are fairly upset with Qatar and others funding ISIS. However, I think one also has to see this from Qatar's point of view to make sense of this.
ISIS didn't arise in a vacuum. Assad, Iran and Russia (CAUSED) ISIS through their actions the last 4 years otherwise ISIS wouldn't be what it is now. Maliki in Iraq CAUSED ISIS by repressing Sunnis in Iraq too.
So, Maliki, Assad, Iran and Russia ALL caused ISIS to be what it is now. Even now as Greece worries about ISIS operatives traveling through Greece to do bad things in other parts of Europe, the cause is still MALIKI in Iraq, Iran, Assad and Russia and Syria has become a Russian Smokescreen for things they continue to do in Ukraine and possibly Estonia to in addition to Crimea which has already been taken over while the world watched.
So, could Syria become a failed state in the way Libya looks like today?
The short answer is:Yes.
The present situation is that after Assad and ISIS kill the rest of the moderate Sunnis who only want to overthrow Assad and ISIS, ISIS is going to turn on Assad and likely Assad will be finished.
So, in this IRan has lost in losing first Maliki and now likely in losing Assad too. But, Iran has a much bigger problem than losing Iraq and Syria, it now could lose Iran to ISIS too.
I'm talking about the next 10 to 20 years now and not today. But, the writing is on the wall already.
I don't think ISIS can be wiped off the map anymore than Al Qaeda could completely.
And that's another strange thing there is also a war between Al Qaeda and ISIS for dominance of the whole Sunni Islamic Terror thing too. So, that will be interesting to watch too.
So, will Syria become a failed state like Somalia in the 1990s and likely Libya today? Likely Yes.
So, just expect Iran to be building nuclear weapons because that might be the only way that Iran can survive all this as a nation sort of like North Korea is now.
