Whether this is physical abuse (cutting, beating torturing, mental or physical abuse or even sexual abuse) this appears to be the primary psychological cause of all types of fundamentalism around the world.
People often want to talk about Muslim fundamentalism because a Muslim fundamentalist wants to kill anyone not of their Muslim sect no matter their religion or faith or lack of one.
However, to me, fundamentalism is in all religions, it is in atheism, and there are even scientific fundamentalists.
So, to me, extremist thinking of all kinds (my way or the highway kinds of thinking) that often results in people dying, is usually caused by some kind of abuse that person suffered as a child growing up.
This makes that person terrified of certain kinds of change so they engage in Black and white thinking on an extreme scale to the point where anyone with a different point of view is liable to be killed by them or someone who shares this point of view.
So, if we trace all fundamentalism to child abuse (physical and sexual) and realize it is an aberrant response to chaotic stimuli as children the whole thing begins to make a whole lot more sense whether it is religious fundamentalism (all religions) or whether it is scientific fundamentalism or whether it is atheistic fundamentalism.
In the end when people get this extreme over any viewpoint and demand everyone adhere to their extremism people often die because of this.
I think this is a helpful way to view fundamentalism of all kinds as a form of mental illness caused by physical and/or sexual child abuse in humans on earth.
