This is basically what my 2009 Kawasaki klr 650 looks like
This is what it looks like. I have taken it off road to places like Mt. Shasta to ride the dirt roads around the mountain below 9000 feet in elevation. Also, I like to ride it along the beach or up or down Highway 1 in the San Francisco area or on dirt roads wherever they are available.
I haven't ridden it that far as far as long distances are concerned because I have noticed that my right wrist gets tired holding the hand throttle on after about 1/2 to 2 hours time. I suppose I could buy or make a device to help me but that also seems a little bit dangerous if you couldn't release your hand throttle quickly enough in an emergency.
For me, Motorcycles are not really about transportation, they are a way to see remote places and be out alone or with friends in nature some place. It has always been this way since I was 10 years old and started riding small and larger motorcycles and mini-bikes that were motorized. My first motorized vehicle was a Wren by bird:
This is what it looked like around 1960. I kept it at my father's place in the desert for everyone to ride out there near Yucca Valley, California on the high desert there until my father passed away in 1985 at his home there.
But, it could do 30 mph and had a centrifugal clutch and a piece of metal that came against the rear tire as a break. However, you had to watch yourself in deep sand with these little wheels. My older cousin (who was a mechanical genius) got it running about 45 mph and flipped it in deep sand only wearing a bathing suit and bare feet and got fairly peeled by that. He was picking sand out of his wounds for a month after that. But, it didn't damage the Mini-bike because the sand didn't damage the bike at all.
One time when I was about 14 or 15 I was riding in my high school parking lot and the throttle stuck at about 30 and I had to hit a tennis wire fence at about 25 or 30. The way I survived it was when I was right at the fence I pulled the mini-bike straight up and took the concussion in my chest on the foam seat rather than in my face. The concussion might have cracked some ribs but I was laughing once I could breathe again while my friend ran towards me with a worried look on his face.
When I bought my KLR 650 it was brand new so I paid cash for it then in 2009. Before that I took a Motorcycle driving course at Cabrillo College in Santa Cruz to get a new license. It's much harder to get a motorcycle license now than it used to be. They give you something under 200cc to ride and it cost then about 250 to 300 dollars but it is probably more now. But, you don't have to pass a driving test at the DMV. You take the driving test right at the college on one of their under 200cc bikes. Most were about 125 to 175 in size then. However, it is much easier to pass by taking one of these courses.
Also, they really teach you stuff I didn't know about before regarding street riding. Because I mostly have preferred off-roading and only rode a little on pavement before now.
IF you have never ridden off pavement before on a motorcycle don't use your front brake at all for anything except holding the bike in place stationary on a hill or something like that if you don't want to die.
Off road, using your front brake while you are moving is a good way to die or get injured because the front brake will just make the bike lay down right then.
