Snorkeling in your late 60s

MY friend and his girlfriend who I'm traveling in Hawaii with are younger than I. Also, they didn't almost die of a heart virus in 1998 or 1999 either. So, though I snorkel and do all the other interesting things like skiing 4 wheel driving and hiking like they do too, I'm a little more careful about it. I don't go out into the water (ocean quite as far as they do). I take a boogie board as an emergency float that I attach to my wrist with the leash and I let it float free. This saved my life the other day when a wave hit me in my face when I was over my head in the ocean at Beach 69 near Hapuna Beach and part of that beach system on Kona side. I swallowed the salt water so I could keep breathing and not choke but what really save my life was having my boogie board close by so I could pull it towards me to rest on it while I caught my breath after coughing out whatever salt water was left in my mouth.

The same thing happened to my friend's son who is about 30 and who has brought his girlfriend here from Oregon to travel and to snorkel with us. Only I'm not sure if he has snorkeled before. IN his case he had to try to find a rock to step upon without stepping on a sea urchin on the bottom or coral where he was. Sea Urchins are really bad to step on one of the spines and coral cuts are dangerous and can lead to staph infections unless you treat them with Neosporin which will stop the staph from eating away your skin more and more over time.

Anyway, he found rock to stand upon so he didn't drown when seawater when down the wrong way. He was lucky. Where I was was too deep for that so my boogie board was all I had.

Later yesterday we went to Honaunau
