This is one reason people like San Francisco because you likely will never see a single day above 85 degrees Fahrenheit all summer long. However, the fog (both high and low) will often penetrate you as the inland heat draws it in and temperatures can be 40 to 70 degrees all summer long day and night. So, if you expect sun in the summer if you are coming to San Francisco. Think Again! You might get sun and you might not.
The warmest it gets along the northern Coast there is Santa Cruz. So, many surfers live in or near Santa Cruz because of this and also just north of Santa Cruz is Maverick's which is the highest surf beach traditionally on the west coast.
Another interesting thing about the Northern California coast: People generally who live along the ocean don't own air conditioners north of Big Sur all the way north because it never gets above about 85 degrees or maybe 90 degrees for more than one day every few years.
