They cannot exist without institutions that support that trust.
They cannot exist without individuals who are leaders who are worthy of that Trust
Democracy even for places like England and America came originally from the Magna Carta when King John was forced to give up many rights as a King or be put to death by his people.
So, it is possible to say that even after the Magna Carta, Separation of church and state and all the rest, democracy couldn't have taken hold in the U.S. they way it did if the people weren't armed to force it to happen.
So, unless people have land and jobs and education and history, democracy is not really possible. Because even if someone is in a different party and philosophy than you are, if someone kills that person from one party or another it erodes trust.
To this day trust between races is still problematic even here in the U.S.
We have sort of worked out the religion part by separating church and state, so no religion actually rules the U.S.
You could say we are majority Christian but then there are hundreds or thousands of varieties of this as well.
So then, you could say like Europe we are culturally Christian but more Secular Christian than anything else which also would be true.
But, what makes the U.S. work?
An armed populace that has learned to relatively trust itself in times of peace and war.
Until any nation has this it likely cannot become a successful democracy ever.
